Collage is another Memories in the Making activity that can be used with patients at all stages of the disease, and it is less intimidating than painting or drawing.
Supply List:
· Magazines
· Blunt nose scissors
· Construction paper (multiple colors)
· Glue stick
Helpful Hints for Collage:
· Do not underestimate the power of collage for sparking memories.
· Have a wide array of magazines available to select pictures from. You can ask your friends and family to save magazines for you (they will be happy to feel like they are helping).
· Let the artist select the picture as you or they thumb through the magazine.
· If the artist is capable, let them cut out their own picture choices. However, if they cannot use scissors safely, ask them to point to the picture that they want you to cut out.
· Use a large colored construction paper to mount the selected pictures.
· Allow the artist to point out where they want the picture placed on the paper.
· Ask the artist to describe their collage.
Note: The family member assistant should try to avoid being too helpful, thereby discouraging the independence of the artist. This is often challenging for family members, but it is important to foster your loved one’s autonomy as much as possible. Avoid setting high expectations for your artist; rather, relax and enjoy the moment.
